If there’s any time you’re feeling tired and lethargic and just not up to much, perhaps its time to take a weekend to yourself, have a detox massage or two, drink loads of water and spoil yourself with loads of fresh crunchy apples while you eliminate some toxins and restore your energy levels.

Detoxing stimulates your body’s natural ability to get rid of the toxic waste that builds up in your cells, tissues and organs. Unless we eat a completely clean diet of fresh, organic and naturally grown fruits, vegetables and meat, and drink plenty of water and natural fruit and vegetable juices, we need to consider a detox a couple of times a year.

The kinds of food and drink we consume, the stressful but sedentary lives we lead and the number of pollutants to which we are exposed through the air we breathe, the water we drink and even the products we use on our bodies and to clean our homes, are often more than our bodies can effectively get rid of. So we store up these toxins in our body tissues resulting in our vitality being terribly depleted. It robs our bodies of necessary nutrients also encourages the development of degenerative diseases and early ageing. To restore our health and vitality, we need to get rid of all these toxins.

Beautiful skin, a firm and healthy body and a clear mind are dependent on our body’s ability to effectively get rid of the waste and toxins before they do damage.

The beautiful, late Leslie Kenton, who studied and wrote extensively on health, beauty and spirituality, and made an enormous impact on the health industry by introducing science and research into her writing and teachings on health and wellbeing, recommended a two-day apple detox. It was taught to her by a British medical doctor, Dr Gordon Latto, whom she says used nothing but food and breathing techniques, and a few herbs to heal even the most complex and chronic conditions.

What to do:

So, let’s try it.  Take two days (or more if you like), buy loads of the freshest apples you can find, and treat yourself to some alone, detox time. Eat as much as you want. Whenever you want. But, ONLY apples! And water. (Eat the entire apple, including the skin, pips and core. Just not the woody stem.)It will help eliminate retained water, revive energy levels and get your skin and eyes shining. (PS: If you’re pregnant, breast-feeding, have kidney, liver or heart complaints, a sudden change in diet such as this is not recommended. Discuss with your doctor before doing this detox.)

The day before you start the detox, get your body ready by avoiding tea (except herbal tea), coffee, alcohol and sugar drinks. Make your last evening meal a lovely large raw salad. This will help your body prepare for the elimination process. Then, for the next two days, eat nothing but apples, whole, grated and sprinkled with a little cinnamon, or put them in a blender with spring water, for a tasty drink. Herb teas and spring water are the only other drinks allowed.

Apples stimulate the secretion of digestive juices. They are rich in pectin, a soluble fibre, which helps clear out heavy metals such as lead and aluminium that we pick up from the air, food and water. Apples are rich in Vitamin E, biotin and folic acid (two B-Complex vitamins which help preserve energy and keep your digestive system clean and functioning well). They also contain Vitamins A and C, both natural antioxidants, as well as minerals such as potassium, iodine, silica, magnesium and calcium. A whole lot of healthy nutrients!

Let me know if you try it and how it goes.
