Magnificent yellow bananas are packed with nutrients and available all through the year. Firstly they are very high in Potassium, a mineral electrolyte which is very beneficial for heart health and normal blood pressure. Another cardiovascular benefit from bananas is from their sterol content, a type of fat they contain.  These sterols are structured similarly to cholesterol, so they are able to block the absorption of dietary cholesterol, keeping our blood cholesterol levels in check. They are also high in Magnesium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and antioxidants.

Their high levels of tryptophan helps with sleep patterns as well overcoming depression, as the body converts tryptophan to serotonin, which elevates your mood. Magnesium is a known as a muscle relaxant. For this reason, bananas have long been valued by athletes for the prevention of muscle cramps. Both the Potassium and Magnesium in bananas contribute to less muscle cramping. Studies have shown Potassium to be beneficial for maintaining healthy kidneys, protection against loss of muscle mass, preservation of bone mineral density and reduction in the formation of kidney stones.

Vitamin A and carotenoids helps protect us against chronic diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease prevent anaemia and coronary artery disease. These compounds are also good for protecting your eyes and maintaining normal vision.

Bananas are high in several free-radical-gobbling antioxidants! Free radicals are linked to many degenerative diseases.

Bananas are a low GI fruit.
