Bitter Orange

Citrus aurantium var. Bigaradia

I just love the joyfulness and energy of this beautiful essential oil. The bitter orange is an evergreen tree and the oil is extracted from the rind of the fruit.
In Aromatherapy, this oil is often used to alleviate stress and reduce anxiety. It instills a sense of calmness and promotes relaxation, helping to quieten the chattery mind. Bitter Orange is also helpful for chronic fatigue and general malaise. It is also used in dealing with long-term exhaustion, sleep disorders and depression.

In a massage blend, it is tremendous for easing muscular aches, bruises and joint pain. Use one drop of Clove oil with two drops of Bitter Orange in 5ml for an uplifting and relaxing neck and shoulder massage.
Bitter Orange essential oil used in a massage blend is effective in treating constipation, stomach ache, flatulence, nausea and poor digestion.  It is also helpful for clearing congestion of the liver and stimulating the lymphatic system.
Diffusing Bitter Orange oil has been said to help dispel frustration and kiddies tantrums and a good oil to add to a room spray for children’s nurseries, creches and play schools as it is not only calming, but has antiseptic, anti fungal and antibacterial properties too.
Bitter Orange is non-irritant, non-toxic and non-sensitising, but is known to be photo-toxic on the skin.  So avoid exposure to the sun after applying the oil to the skin (whether in the bath, lotion or in a massage).
