Rock Rose

Cistus labdanum

This is a truly captivating oil. It is a musky, woody oil with a slight sweet undertone. It is mostly used in the perfume industry, as a fixative, as it enhances the scents of the other oils. But it has a few wonderful properties to take advantage of.

Labdanum has antibacterial and astringent properties making it very good to use on the skin. It can help reduce signs of ageing and rejuvenate tired and dull looking skin. I sometimes add a little of it to my Skin Repair cream in the evening before applying it to my face, neck and décolletage. I just love the aroma and look it gives my skin. It also helps reduce any irritated or inflamed skin issues.

People who suffer from sore and inflamed joints and muscles may also benefit from this essential oil. Add a few drops to a tablespoon of a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond or Grapeseed and massage into the painful areas. You could add this blend into your bath too and soak up the benefits as you relax in the warm water.
Emotionally, Labdanum seems to be able bring calm and help with relieving stress. Rub a drop between the palms of your hands and inhale its divine scent. Or blend it with a drop of Sandalwood and Frankincense oils and use it in a diffuser for a very calm, relaxing and meditative evening.
For a good night’s sleep, a blend of Labdanum, Vetiver and Lavender will send you into a gentle dreamland.

Cistus labdanum or Rock Rose, blends well with Clary Sage, Cypress, Frankincense, Lavender, Patchouli, Sandalwood, Rose and Vetiver.

It is best to avoid Cistus Labdanum during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
